Dear citizens,
we are pleased to present the Viersen district police authority's report on crime trends in 2023. The available data enables a comparison with the corresponding figures from the five previous years, which makes it possible to understand the development in the individual crime areas.
The total number of crimes in the reporting year amounted to 18,823, which represents a decrease of 0.7% compared to the previous year.
This decrease is a result of our dedicated and professional police work. The increased clearance rate of 58.4% is also pleasing. In 2022, the rate was 55.2 percent. This exceeds both the average of previous years and the national average, which highlights the effectiveness of our investigations and underlines the consistent security status of the district of Viersen.
In the 2023 reporting year, we recorded an increase in domestic burglaries, which is roughly at the level of the years before the coronavirus pandemic. Overall, there was an increase of 12.6% compared to the previous year. Fortunately, 49.5% of the recorded cases ended in an attempt. Last year, the proportion of attempted burglaries was 44.5 percent.
The finding that many crimes remain at the attempt stage indicates the success of our preventive measures. We continue to invite the citizens of the district of Viersen to take advantage of the wide range of prevention services offered by the Viersen district police.
It is very important to keep a watchful eye on neighborhood concerns in order to prevent crime. In this context, we would like to thank all citizens who have contributed to the investigation or prevention of crimes through their attention and information and thus supported the work of the police.
Salutations
Dr. Andreas Coenen Dietmar Maus
